Are there long-term risks associated with GLP-1 medications?

M
Written by Max Felton

GLP-1 medications are generally considered safe for many patients when used under medical supervision, but ongoing monitoring matters with any long-term therapy.

Possible safety considerations include:

  • Not recommended for patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2 syndrome

  • A possible increased risk of pancreatitis

  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when combined with insulin or certain diabetes medications

  • Gallbladder issues, including gallstones, particularly with rapid weight loss

  • Common temporary side effects such as nausea, bloating, constipation, or fatigue, which typically ease as your body adjusts

Your provider reviews your health history before starting treatment and monitors your response over time to help manage safety and adjust your plan as needed.
